Q & A — Knuckle Bones

Can I feed knuckle bones to my dogs? Is it safe and won’t it destroy their teeth?

Bones are great, but be careful giving those larger knuckle bones to small chihuahuas. When the bone is super big, it’s got a lot more marrow inside and that marrow, while good for them, is also very calorie rich—too much marrow in one serving can result in loose stool or diarrhea.

A simple solution when you wind up with super big knuckle bones is to let them warm up / reach room temperature on the counter, then use a tea spoon to scoop out 1/3 or 1/2 of the marrow. I set the extra marrow aside and put it in their regular food or give it a day later as an extra treat, that way they don’t get too many calories in one serving or wind up with diarrhea as a result.
