Q & A — Getting Another Dog

Looking for advice! I have a 1 year old chihuahua boy that is fun and lovable and just has the best attitude. My husband wants to get another chihuahua, but I’m worried that my boy’s personality will change. I just love him the way he is. If we get another chihuahua, in your experience will it change his fun, loving personality?

I recommend getting a young female (anywhere from 2 – 6 months of age would be ideal). Your male is young, so they should bond readily, and his temperament is unlikely to change. My husband and I got our male first, then when he was about a year old we brought home his little sister at 8 weeks old. They get on wonderfully, snuggle, love, and keep each other company. Good luck, having a pair is great (and yeah, two males may get along just fine, but neutered or not you will likely have marking wars with two males because of their drive to claim territory—with a male-female pair, the male has far less inclination to mark).
