Q & A — Breeding Age
At what age is best to let a male chihuahua breed? I have a female who is 1.5 years old and a friend of mine has a male that is only a few months old.
The boy should be at least 1 year old, preferably 2 years or older and thoroughly tested for the major issues—patellas, heart, eyes, etc.
The girl should absolutely not be bred until she is at least 2 years old. Breeding a girl under 2 is extremely dangerous for her. The girl should also be examined by a veterinarian to ensure that she’s in good health and that her pelvic structure is suitable for delivering puppies. C-sections are dangerous and harmful, so if you have a female with very small pelvic structure, she shouldn’t be bred at all.
